The Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) is responsible for the implementation of environmental policy in order to foster sustainable development at global, regional and national levels.  It is also UNEP’s focal Division for capacity building, which characterizes most of UNEP’s work.  In cooperation with international and national partners DEPI adopts an integrated approach in providing technical assistance, advisory services, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The activities of the Division are needs driven; based on global regional and national priorities.

DEPI comprises the following branches:

  • Capacity building;
  • Environmental emergencies and Post Conflict Assessment;
  • Implementation of Environmental Law;
  • The Coordination Office of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from land-based Activities (GPA);
  • Special Projects Unit: the Dams and Development Project, Coral Reefs, and the Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP).
