IWCAM-March 2007 newsletter
This year’s observance of World Water Day seeks to remind us of the limited supply of water available globally and more so within parts of our region. It reminds us that we cannot take for granted that water will always be available to support our existence.
IWCAM-January 2007 bulletin
This bulletin is designed primarily to keep our stakeholders informed of the progress being made with project implementation, from the standpoints of both the region and the demonstration projects. It will be one of many forms of project outreach and will encourage the sharing of information among participating countries as well as with the wider community. A longer format newsletter to be published quarterly will provide more detailed information and have wider reach.

In December 2006 the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) and the United Nations Environment Programme Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (UNEP-CAR/ RCU), under the auspices of the Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management (IWCAM) Project, convened a meeting of the IWRM Informal Working Group in Kingston, Jamaica. This resulted in a collaborative effort which aims to provide assistance to governments in the region to accelerate the achievement of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation target of Integrating Water Resources Management and Efficiency Plans by 2005; in particular, ensuring that environmental aspects and public participation are adequately incorporated in the roadmaps and plans produced.

We often hear about monitoring and evaluation (M&E) (how important it is for projects, that M&E systems need to be established, etc.), but do we really understand what M&E is and why we use it? This issue of the Bulletin attempts to answer key questions related to M&E and to help GEF-IWCAM demonstration projects and key stakeholders develop effective M&E systems.

The Fond D’or watershed, Saint Lucia’s GEFIWCAM Demonstration Project site, is considered an ideal location to develop and test compensation for environmental services (CES), a creative and novel approach to integrated watershed and coastal areas management. The project is being executed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (MAFF), through both a Project Steering Committee (PSC) for oversight and a Project Management Unit (PMU) which oversees day-to-day implementation within the Project’s geographical area. The PMU is also guided by the Fond D’or Watershed Management Committee (WMC) established by the GEF-IWCAM Demonstration Project (see below).

IWCAM-March 2008 Newsletter
The lack of basic environmental statistics and indicators is considered a major problem in the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) of the Caribbean. Indicators, which are quantitative or qualitative statements or measured/observed parameters that can be used to describe existing situations and measure changes or trends over time, are important in determining success in the integration of watershed and coastal area management and the resulting improvement of the environment and associated livelihoods.
