Al Sanbouk newsletter 01-12-2005 for PERSGA
Welcome to the twenty second edition of our Newsletter Al-Sanbouk which comes at the end of the implementation of the Strategic action Programme for the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (SAP) executed by PERSGA and its Member States. I was appointed as the Minister of Environment and Physical Development in Sudan following HE –El-Tegani Adam El-Taher. Among other matters I went through the PERSGA files and its activities at both national and regional levels. It is encouraging to feel the interaction and cooperation be- tween PERSGA and its member states. The fruits of such cooperation were capacity building in PERSGA and its member states, navigation safety in hazardous areas south of the Red Sea, reduction in the use of destructive fishing methods, practical movement in habitat and biodiversity conservation among which are the establishment of marine protected areas, development of ICZM plans and enhancement of public awareness.

The release of the 19th issue of Al Sanbouk coincides with the successful completion of a five year period of uninterrupted work (1998-2003) by dedicated PERSGA staff towards the protection of the environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. It marks the end point of a period during which PERSGA spared no effort to convert aspirations of progress and development in the Region into reality, and to help in protecting the environment and its natural resources for the welfare of future generations. PERSGA, with its seven member countries, completed the core activities of the SAP (Strategic Action Programme) by the end of 2003. The SAP took five years of continuous work and was supported by the GEF implementing agencies (UNDP, UNEP and World Bank) and the Islamic Development Bank

Welcome to issue number nine! It seems no time at all since issue eight was rolling of the press and yet we appear to be missing our deadlines again. Luckily this is not the Arab News or the Washington Post or we would both be fired by now! Once again we bring you information on our current progress supplemented by specialist articles.

Welcome to the second issue of the PERSGA newsletter Al Sambouk. The name of this newsletter reflects its function: Al Sambouk is meant to be a vehicle which will inform and educate the people of the region about the marine environment and the activities which are occurring here to conserve and protect our valuable, shared resources. We wish to thank those people who wrote congratulatory and encouraging letters in response to the first issue of Al Sambouk. I would like to invite readers to contribute articles for Al Sambouk (in either English or Arabic) about activities you are currently involved in, or if you wish to announce a coming workshop or conference.

So much news nowadays describes to us the poor state of health suffered by many of the earth’s seas and oceans: coastal areas being degraded by oil and chemical pollution and poor building practices; coral reefs being destroyed by excessive nutrients, explosives, or siltation from unmanaged land activities; marine resources being over-fished relentlessly. But the news is not all bad.
