- WIO-LaB Insight - Volume 1 Issue 1
- This is the first issue of the WIO-LaB biannual newsletter, and it is therefore my great pleasure to address a few personal words to its readers. It has only been a few months ago , on 14th of February to be exact, since I arrived in Nairobi to take on the position of Project Manager for the WIO-LaB project. Many things have happened since: I have enjoyed my re-acquaintance with the region where I last worked in 1994 on an environmental pollution assessment of Lake Victoria.
- WIO-LaB Insight - Volume 2 Issue 1
- believe that nobody would dare to say that starting up a new project, covering eight countries in an area as large as the Western Indian Ocean, with a diversity of cultures, languages and states of development, is easy. Yet, I believe that after a year of project implementation we have achieved a lot. By saying “we”, I not only refer to the Project Management Unit, but more so to the network of National Focal Points, and the experts, policy makers, NGOs and other regional and national stakeholders participating in and contributing to the project.
- WIO-LaB Insight - Volume 2 Issue 2
- T he second meeting of the Project Steering Committee, held in Diani, Kenya on 7th March 2006, acknowledged the good achievements of the WIO-LaB project in 2005, and has given its go-ahead for implementation of activities in the year 2006. Among others, the Committee prioritized seven demonstration projects for further development, in addition to the two earlier agreed fast-track projects. Preparatory activities for each of these projects are presently underway.
- WIO-LaB Insight - Volume 3 Issue 1
- Quite a bit has been achieved and most activities are well underway. The project has clearly gained a lot of momentum and the spin-offs there of are beginning to surface. However, there are also a number of cases where progress has been impeded by limitations in capacity at the national level, or by the long time that certain political and consultative processes unavoidably take.
- WIO-LaB Insight - Volume 3 Issue 2
- he third meeting of the Project Steering Committee, which was held in Seychelles on 13 March 2007, established the annual project workplan. There is a quite a lot that awaits us this year; with all project components actively engaged, we expect the results from various studies, assessments and the development of guidelines and other tools to be finalised during the course of the year.
