The Website Toolkit is based on 'Plone', the popular and widely used open source content management system, and the Toolkit's rich set of features mirrors those of Plone.

Improved web page editing

The Toolkit includes a user-friendly and powerful editing tool which enables you to readily format text, and insert images and hyperlinks. It is similar to using Microsoft Word or other word processors.

Create websites without any complex set-up procedures

If hosting on your own server, the Toolkit works with Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and Solaris. The software installers help get you up and running within minutes. The installation is straightforward.

UNEP/IW:LEARN provides support to all projects who wish to utilise the Website Toolkit as their web solution. UNEP/IW:LEARN provides free website hosting and design and development services to projects adopting the Toolkit.

Available in over 35 languages, the Toolkit provides multilingual content management. It supports Chinese, Japanese, and right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.

All content is instantly searchable, including Word documents and PDF files. Plone's LiveSearch feature also facilitates an instant search. Websites based on the Toolkit are cross-browser friendly and sites based on this software are typically ranked well in Google search results.

Syndicate your website content

By syndicating your web content using RSS feeds, you can readily share information with other users. By using the RSS feed generated by your website, users can keep up-to-date with what is new on your site. It is also possible to use RSS feeds to integrate your website content into another website using a feed reader/aggregator and vice versa.

New content is automatically inserted into your website's Site Map. The Toolkit's Site Map is designed to make it easier for visitors to navigate your website.

To date there are five published books about the underlying technology (Plone) of the Website Toolkit, which have been translated into various languages including German and Japanese.
