Needs and gaps assessment of the higher education programmes in the field of cryosphere in Central Asia. Annex 4 to: Diagnostic Analysis of the main issues of the cryosphere monitoring, observation, and research in Central Asia.
This publication assesses the current state of higher education and capacity development in cryosphere sciences in Central Asia, based on regional consultations and a multi-stakeholder survey conducted under the GEF–UNDP–UNESCO Cryosphere Project. Drawing on inputs from academic institutions, practitioners and recent graduates, it identifies key gaps in education and workforce readiness, including limited specialization, insufficient practical training and weak links to labour market needs. The analysis highlights the shortage of qualified professionals as a critical barrier to effective cryosphere research, monitoring and management, and provides recommendations to strengthen curricula, support specialised programmes and enhance regional cooperation to build long-term capacity in the sector.
