The targeted exchange visits programme aims to deepen understanding of the importance, needs, and benefits of groundwater management in national and transboundary contexts by sharing good practices and lessons learned. The South-South exchange visits programme will also encourage participants to consider conjunctive management in their countries. The exchange visits programme will empower participants by sharing practical tools, solutions, and best practices to promote effective and sustainable groundwater management.
Expected outcomes
The knowledge-sharing exercise will build on the experiences of countries and partners, as well as on relevant guidance, including the Model Provisions on Transboundary Groundwaters (UNECE, 2014), the Updated Strategies for Monitoring and Assessment of Transboundary Rivers, Lakes and Groundwaters (UNECE, 2023) and the Draft Articles on the Law of Transboundary Aquifers adopted by the International Law Commission in 2008.
It is expected that participants will strengthen their knowledge of the technical, scientific and legal frameworks needed for transboundary groundwater management, the benefits and challenges of its implementation, and experiences in conjunctive water management, including
- identification of suitable water sources for conjunctive use,
- institutional set-ups,
- legal and regulatory frameworks, and
- socio-economic benefits, success stories and good practices of groundwater management.
