- Water Governance for Poverty Reduction (UNDP Iraq)
- The Consultant will lead the operationalization of the strategic priorities and recommendations of the UNDP Water Governance Strategy in the Iraq context. S/he will lead the development of the Iraq Water Governance Programme which would include a number of on-going initiatives that have reached various stages of progress, some being already started and others still being planned as well as to follow-up on relevant recommendations from the water conference held in May 2007. These include for instance (i) a Decision Support System Project (DSS) for water resource planning in cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources and (ii) support Iraq in its participation in a regional transboundary water initiative (Application Deadline: 8 July 2009).
- Water Management and Adaptation Specialist
- Encompassing 10 weeks of work throughout the duration of the PPG the Water Managmeent and Adaptation Specialist (referred to as the ‘International Consultant’ or IC) will complete two missions to Comoros complemented by home-based work. The IC is expected to remain in Comoros for 6 weeks of the 10 week contract. The IC will prepare the project document for submission to the GEF, working closely with the National Consultant, under the guidance of the Steering Committee for the project development phase (Government Focal Point, UNDP-Country Office (CO), UNDP-Regional Coordination Unit-Pretoria, UNEP Regional Office) with day-to-day supervision by the Regional Technical Advisor (RTA) for Adaptation (Application Deadline: 23 June 2009).
- Consultant,Guru Small Hydropower Project
- This request for expression of interest (EOI) follows the approval by the Board of Directors’ of Chinga Tea Factory Company, Gathuthi Tea Factory Company, Gitugi Tea Factory Company and Iriaini Tea Factory Company to fully implement the Gura Small Hydropower Project. Gura Small Hydropower Project located on Gura River that traverses through Aberdere forest, in Nyeri District Kenya. The project will be implemented under the KTDA management and mode of implementation for the power project will be Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC). The successful consultant will be a firm or individuals who would carry out the services specified below. The consultant would act as Team Leader and Project Site Manager (Application Deadline: 25 June 2009).
- Fellows (United Nations - the Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme)
- The Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) of the Office of Legal Affairs is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 session of the United Nations - The Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme. During the last five years, 55 awards have been made to nationals of 48 States (Application Deadline: 15 August 2009).
- Consultants, UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI)
- The UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI) is updating its database of experts. From this roster, consultants will be hired to carry out individual short-term assignments related to mainstreaming poverty-environment linkages into development planning in selected countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), as needed (Application Deadline: 16 June 2009).
- Project Manager, Ecosystems management for improved human well-being in the Lake Faguibine System (UNOPS)
- Under the administrative supervision of UNOPS Portfolio Manager, the substantial guidance of the Deputy Director, DEPI, the Head, Freshwater Ecosystems Unit, (DEPI) and in close coordination with the Director, Regional Office for Africa (ROA), UNEP and the Resident Coordinator, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Mali, the incumbent will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Project Management Support Unit (PMSU) from Goundam, Mali. The overarching responsibility of the Project Manager is to ensure that the PMSU, in close collaboration with “Office pour la Mise en Valeur du système Faguibine” (OMVF) implements the Phase 1 of the Project in accordance with the Project Document, within the priorities of the Government of Mali and guided by the relevant UNEP policies and strategies (Application Deadline: 3 June 2009).
- Institutional Support Officer (World Water Council)
- Under the general supervision of the Director General, the Institutional support Officer prepares the Board of Governors and the Bureau meetings, acts as the Secretariat liaison with the President’s Office, support the Director General in preparation and follow-up of meetings, handles contacts with members and partners. He/ she will write notes and correspondence related to these tasks and will support administrative duties (Application Deadline: 7 June 2009).
- Policy Officer (CIWEM)
- The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is an independent professional body and a registered charity, advancing the science and practice of water and environmental management for a clean, green and sustainable world. This is a varied and challenging post which develops and promotes environmental policy work at CIWEM. The post requires enthusiasm, excellent administration and organisational skills, good teamwork, a good understanding of environmental issues and the ability to self motivate. CIWEM can offer a very friendly working environment and a pleasant central London location (Application Deadline: 5 June 2009).
- Project Manager, C Envelope Project of the 9th EU European Development Fund (SOPAC)
- The European Union (EU) in collaboration with the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) has provided funds to support the Pacific territories of French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Pitcairn Island and Wallis and Futuna in measures to reduce their vulnerability to both natural and anthropogenic disasters. For this project, SOPAC has established a Project Management Unit under its Community Risk Programme to be responsible for implementation. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to reducing the vulnerability of Pacific Overseas Countries and Territories’ (OCT) communities of French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Pitcairn Islands, and Wallis and Futuna to losses and impacts from natural and anthropogenic disasters and from the impacts from climate change and weather extremes as the best approach to adapt to future climate change (12 June 2009).
- Pacific Islands GOOS Coordinator (SOPAC)
- This is an exciting opportunity for an upcoming or established marine science professional to provide leadership to the development and ongoing implementation of a programme of work designed to address some important challenges for Pacific island communities. The position is for 3 years initially, and an attractive salary and benefit package will be offered, commensurate with terms and conditions agreed to by the governing bodies of the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (Application Deadline: 12 June 2009).
- International Water Rights Advisor (IRD)
- IRD seeks a senior international water rights advisor to provide the expert advice on international water rights. Working closely with senior officials, the advisor will analyze and summarize laws, policies and agreements in the region, and prioritize issues and policy options. He/she will also train/mentor key government staff, and advise on the drafting and negotiation of international water rights agreements. This is a one-year assignment (Application Deadline: 20 July 2009).
- Expert for Integrated Water Management (Welthungerhilfe - German Agro Action)
- As an expert in the field, the expert is responsible for managing the project "Integrated Water Management". The expert will support the target groups with the social and technical management of their irrigation structures (Application Deadline: 3 June 2009).
- Wetlands Restoration Design Consultant (MCA-Lesotho)
- The consultant will produce engineering drawings, construction plans and specifications, recommendations for re-vegetating disturbed areas of the wetlands, and a detailed narrative report providing the background basis for the recommendations (e.g., literature review and project examples) and details of the data and supporting analyses for the recommended designs. The designs should build local capacity, provide job opportunities for local communities, and effectively restore wetlands. In addition they should be environmentally friendly and be compliant with the legal environmental requirements both locally and internationally (Application Deadline: 17 June 2009).
- Coordinator (UN-Water, Zaragoza Office)
- Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Director of the Division for Sustainable Development, the Coordinator will be responsible for implementing all aspects of UN-Water communication and advocacy program as agreed within the framework of the host country agreement signed between the United Nations and the Government of the Kingdom of Spain. In the programming of Office's activities, and development and implementation of the annual work plan, the Coordinator will work closely with and seek strategic advice and guidance from UN-Water (Application Deadline: 28 May 2009).
- National Project Coordinator (IUCN - Ministry of Environment Project on Supporting the Management of Important Marine Habitats and Species of Lebanon)
- The project coordinator shall work in close cooperation with the staff from the Lebanese Ministry of Environment and other relevant institutions as appropriate to implement, guide and supervise activities related to the execution of this project (Application deadline: 20 May 2009).
- Climate Change Adaptation Officer (IUCN)
- The primary roles of the Climate Change Adaptation Officer will be to work as a focal point for IUCN’s climate change adaptation activities, to ensure that IUCN’s Secretariat, Commissions and Members collaborate more closely to deliver the 2009-2012 Programme on climate change adaptation, to communicate and exchange information both internally and externally, as well as to develop new partnerships. The Climate Change Adaptation Officer will play a key role in IUCN’s engagement with the Ecosystems and Livelihoods Adaptation Network (ELAN). The Climate Change Adaptation Officer will be based in the Ecosystem Management Programme (EMP), but will work directly with other Programmes (Water, Forests, Marine, Protected Areas, Species), initiatives (Drylands, Islands, Invasive species) and regional programmes (Application deadline: 27 May 2009).
- Environmental Affairs Officer, L-3 (UNECE)
- This position will report to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Environment, Housing and Land Management Division Secretariat of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes. Under the general supervision of the Chief, Pollution Prevention Team, and under the direct supervision of the secretary of the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention), the incumbent will be responsible for the preparation of the second assessment of transboundary rivers, lakes and groundwaters (Application deadline: 29 May 2009).
- Consultant: Climate Change Adaptation and Development (UN)
- This position will be home-based with frequent meetings at HQ in New York. Based on the above, UNDP’s Environment and Energy Group (EEG) within the Bureau for Development Policy is currently seeking the services of an International Expert on Climate Change Adaptation and Development to further strengthen its positioning and collaboration with the World Bank and other development partners in promoting adaptation to climate change at the country level, especially in relation to the World Bank’s new international climate change funds provided by donor governments (Application deadline: 20 May 2009).

- Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Expert - Coast
- The UNDP-GEF project COAST focuses the problem of biodiversity and landscape protection and conservation in Dalmatia within a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral context. The project will help Croatia seize the opportunity to improve the conservation of globally significant biodiversity in the Dalmatian coastal region before tourism and related economic development cause irreversible damage to the ecosystems. Therefore, the overall objective of the COAST project is to ensure that the development path of the Croatian coast is environmentally friendly, with the conservation of biological diversity firmly mainstreamed into that development path. The Project will work at several levels: i) national– by promoting reform of the enabling environment; ii) regional (sub-national) - by integrating biodiversity concerns in development planning; iii) local – by developing and implementing, at 4 demonstration sites, best practices for Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) aimed at bio- and landscape diversity conservation and protection; and iv) sectoral – by working directly with the private sector and by making key industrial sectors biodiversity friendly.
